National Park Grasslends



Grasslends National Park, located in southwest Saskatchewan (Canada) - the only park in North America, created to preserve the mixed grass prairie.
The park consists of two parts - east and west - which are located approximately 22 kilometers away from each other. Over time, nature reserve will cover an area of ​​900 square kilometers.
Great Plains of North America constitute one of the most altered ecosystems in the world. Less than two hundred years ago, 100 percent of these lands were completely untouched. Today in Canada have remained undeveloped, 25 percent mixed grass prairie. The idea is to save the prairie meadow, making them a protected area, established in 1830. Approximately one hundred years later, in 1957, the Saskatchewan Natural History Society began working on the creation of this national park area.
National Park status Grasslends was only in 1988. Now, in this and in other Canadian parks are under the protection of 22 species of plants, mammals and birds listed in the official list of endangered species in Canada. In addition, under the protection of the law were, and many other species not found anywhere else on earth.
The relief is uneven, with many natural obstacles. It is best to explore this area on foot or on horseback.
The climate is continental Grasslends park. As a central part of the continent, mitigating actions oceans are not felt. Therefore, the winter temperature drops to minus 50 degrees Celsius in summer rises up to plus 40 degrees, and such differences in these areas are not uncommon. The park is home to approximately 1800 archaeological sites relating to the more distant past. Many of the crests of the mountains, on hilltops and other high ground can be found all around the large stones laid out - the base lodges, or tipis (dwellings). These stones pressed to the ground edge of buffalo hides, which covered with wigwams, because of this skin is not crabs. Here you can also see a number of ancient structures, where the Indians drove buffalo plains, which are then killed and eaten. Many centuries ago this part of Canada was a great place for hunting tribes such as the gro-vantr, Cree, assiniboyn, black feet, and Sioux.
