The most famous museum of the province of Styria, is Joanneum (Landesmuseum Joanneum). Founded at the beginning of the last millennium, about 1811 in Graz, Johann Baptist, who was distinguished by a lively mind and was probably one of the first ecologists that time. Johann paid much attention to the latest achievements of science, technology, and was a patron of progressive ideas and innovative thinking possessed. He is undoubtedly the "father" of the environmental movement, because he first paid attention to the environmental aspects of developing progress and sought to protect the ecology of the planet is not at the expense of science.
The museum is divided into "old" and "new" display, which are located in several buildings on a site separated. In the old part are masterpieces of great artists such as Cranach, Tintoretto, Bruegel, and many others. The main part of the exhibition, was transferred to patrons, but in the museum are the masterpieces that have been in the personal collection of Johann Baptist. The museum also deals with purchases of works of art exhibits for the collection and modern scientific research, allowing to fill "gaps" in the history of Austria.
